Reading Response1 Stigma and Mental Health

Q Background: A major challenge in treating and supporting individuals with mental health is stigma. Stigma in mental health is defined as: Stigma is a mark of disgrace that sets a person apart from others. When a person is labelled by their illness they are no longer seen as an individual but as part of a stereotyped group. Stigma discourages people from getting support for themselves and for their children. Parents may be reluctant to have their child screened or seek assistance for parenting. Women with perinatal mood disorder (post partum depression) may blame themselves for not connecting with their baby. Parents with a trauma history may not understand the impact on their parenting and the resources available to help. Families with a child who does have challenges may isolate themselves. Dealing with mental health has never been easy to do and people of all ages deal with it. It is difficult for people to seek treatment for themselves and their children because of stigma. Parents may be wary about having their children evaluated or seeking parental assistance. People with perinatal mood disorder may blame themselves for not being able to bond with their newborns. Adults who have been through trauma may be ignorant of the consequences on their parenting and the support accessible to them. Stigma is defined as a mark of shame that distinguishes a person from others. When a person's disease is used to identify them, they are no longer regarded as individuals but as members of a stereotyped group. When it comes to dealing with mental health or stigma the main question is how to deal with it or how to help others deal with it? It starts with having an understanding of what is going on, asking the questions.
